Soprano Opera Singer in Miami
Laura Leon is a soprano, born and raised in Havana, Cuba. She started singing at the age of nine with the children’s opera choir at Grand Teatro de la Habana Garcia Lorca. At the age of fifteen she became a member of the Cantoría Nacional Juvenil de Cuba (Teenage National Chorus of Cuba) under the direction of Digna Guerra while continuing in the opera choir at Gran Teatro Garcia Lorca. She emigrated to the United States at the age of seventeen. Since then, she obtained an Associate’s Degree in Music Education at Miami Dade College, a Bachelor’s Degree in Voice Performance at Nyack College and a Master of Music in Voice Performance at Florida International University. Right after her Master’s completion, Laura was hired by Florida Grand Opera as a Young Artist for two consecutive seasons – 2015/2016 and 2016/2017.
Miss Leon made her Florida Grand Opera debut as Frasquita in Carmen. She also performed in Before Night Falls as Mother of a Peasant. While in the company, she covered the roles of Oscar in Un Ballo in Maschera, Norina in Don Pasquale and Yvette in The Passenger.
Laura was last seen as Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos by Strauss with Opera Fusion in August, 2017. Her past performances include La Princesse Laoula in Emmanuel Chabrier’s L’étoile, Marguerita Fiorentino in Weill’s Street Scene; Königin der Nacht in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Musetta in La Bohème and Pamina in Die Zauberflöte. Cunegonde in Candide by Bernstein and Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti. Her Zarzuela credits include Charito in Reveriano Soutullo/Juan Vert’s La leyenda del beso, Elena Gallo in El Barbero de Sevilla by Gimenez and Nieto and soprano soloist in a tribute concert at FIU featuring rarely-heard works of Ernesto Lecuona in Miami, and Madrid, Spain.
Miss Leon’s Musical Theater credits include Maria in West Side Story, Lady Larken in Once Upon a Mattress, Woman 1 in I love you, you are perfect now change, Lulu in Cabaret, Cast member in Showtune! A New Musical Review by Herman, ensemble in Side by Side by Sondheim and Oklahoma. Her future engagements include Pamina in Die Zauberflöte with Opera Louisiane and Lola in the new Off Broadway production of Duelling Divas.
